Healing from Broken Relationships
For over 30 years, Church of the Saviour(COS) has ministered to adults and children going through the heartbreak of separation and divorce by providing a safe place of understanding and help designed to provide hope and a new direction for people's lives. The program is open to all affiliations and beliefs throughout the Greater Delaware Valley.
The stages of grieving from a broken relationship/marriage are similar to the death of a loved one and death of a dream and include denial, fear, bargaining, anger, depression and finally acceptance. At COS we help you to deal with this process by giving you insight into the stages, giving you guidance as to what "to do" and "not to do" and by placing you in a community of caring individuals, all of whom have experienced the same issues you are currently dealing with. Key to the healing process is our belief in a loving and compassionate God who forgives our sins and provides comfort and strength when we are hurting.
The path to hope and a new life is comprehensive and has 3 major components
Fresh Start
The first is a series of weekend seminars conducted two times a year ( March/April and October) called Fresh Start. Each seminar provides a very comprehensive and concentrated look at the issues facing someone going through a broken relationship as provided by a group of "live" speakers, followed by small group discussion. All speakers and small group facilitators are survivors of broken relationships and have been through the program themselves.
In addition to the adult program, there is a concurrent program called Kids in the Middle for children ages 6-10. Children so often become forgotten in the process as the adults struggle to deal with their own emotions and problems. Kids in the Middle helps the children to know it is "not their fault", that it is okay to express their emotions appropriately, and that "God will put a band aid on my heart". There is child-care for children below 5 years of age.
Divorce Care
The second major component to recovery is Divorce Care, a national program that is held on Monday evening for 12 weeks following each Fresh Start weekend. Divorce Care covers a specific topic each evening through a DVD and small group discussion. Topics include issues such as "The road to recovery", Facing my depression", Facing my anger", "New Relationships", etc. Divorce Care allows more time to discuss key issues and provides an opportunity to build relationships with others in the class.
Singles Groups
The final component of moving to a new life is to continue in supportive relationships in healthy community and to establish a strong foundation for your life through spiritual growth. In this regard COS provides a selection of Singles Groups based on your position in life. These include QUEST (college age), EPIC (25-35), COMMON CREED (30's-50's), and FOCUS (single and single again & single parents). All such groups provide the opportunity for spiritual growth, community, and a broad spectrum of social activities such as skiing, bowling, movies, shows, dances, art exhibits, dining, etc.
