Arts Ministry
Church of the Saviour's Arts Ministry believes that the creative expression is God-given and they honor that gift in their work. This reveals itself through imagery that evokes hope, courage and a strong sense of light and color. Several pieces of art have been inspired by Biblical verses. Part of this ministry's mission is to provide service to the community by sharing and teaching their creative gifts, while inspiring and encouraging others in their expressive potential. Their work is displayed each month in the Church of the Saviour lobby.
Then Moses said to the Israelites, "See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills-to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others.

December 2011 Artist of the Month: Bruce Poulterer
Bruce Poulterer is a realist painter who makes his home in Media, PA. After graduating from Penn State University, he worked in his family businesses for 35 years selling to the ice cream and dairy industry. He married his wife in 1967 and has four children and five grandchildren.
Bruce began painting by taking up the watercolor box that his mother used. He felt the need to better understand the use of watercolor so took lessons for a dozen years, read books and participated in workshops from watercolor experts including recently Tom Lynch, Ann Pember, Karen Vernon and Brenda Swenson. He has a desire to continue to grow in his use of watercolors and new types of paper. Bruce is most known for his depiction of buildings in country landscapes and everyday life when things moved at a slower pace.
I was fortunate that my mother was an artist. Observing her drawing and painting gave me insight into how exciting it was to turn an idea into a picture that could be enjoyed by many. But painting is not the most important thing in my life. Because all the ribbons I have won or all the exciting pictures I have painted really make for an empty life. When you look back and ask yourself, "What have I done with my life?", there is a much more exciting part of living that brings more meaning to my life than any completed painting. For many years, my life really seemed fulfilled. I had a comfortable home, wonderful family and a little savings in the bank. I had a good job and enjoyed life. At least, I thought I had everything. Then my world seemed to collapse around me. The home we moved into drained my savings because of numerous repairs, taking away one of the supports in my life. I developed the feeling of being completely overwhelmed by the demands put on me with problems in the home, my projects at work and family needs. This made me aware that the mental anguish I faced could not be handled by anyone but me. No one in my family could handle it. It had to be me..... at least that's what I thought. One day, as I listened to the radio, a commentator put things into perspective. He said that we could not handle life's problems by ourselves, that we needed to put our cares in the hands of someone who could handle all our needs - Jesus Christ. I realized that the only answer for me was to ask for him to take over my life. That meant I had to ask for forgiveness for the sins in my life and turn to Jesus. It wasn't an emotional high, rather a commitment that turned my focus to relying on him instead of me. As I faced different challenges or worries, I realized that praying for Jesus's help was how I needed to respond. He took the worries off my shoulders. Now when I face a problem or fear, I ask the Lord for his help. With each day, I find my reliance in him growing as my prayers are answered. I thank him for taking hold of my life. Now as I start each day, I find that reading the Bible daily allows me to see solutions to questions or problems that I face. He speaks to me through his word. If you'd like to know more about Jesus and how he can help you, please ask me. Here's a verse from the BIBLE that can help you find him:
"And this is the testimony, God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life: and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God; so that you may know that you have eternal life." 1 John 5:11-13
And if you would like to have a tool to help you read the Bible regularly, ask me for a free copy of the Discovery Bible guide published by Scripture Union, where I now volunteer. It is non-denominational tool that takes you about 10 minutes a day to read; it will make it easy for you to read his word. Once you start, you will find hope and peace and won't want to put the Bible down.

November 2011 Artist of the Month: Jim Hall
In the early part of my life I discovered a natural inclination to the arts. I achieved success as a watercolorist and pursued a career in business with an emphasis in information technology management. My life as a painter has always provided a creative juxtaposition to the logical side of my business career.
More recently, as family grew, my inspiration has drawn me into new venues of creative expression. I have evolved from a tightly rendered watercolorist to a more poetic style as an oil painter. The common thread to both mediums is a strong sense of color that I believe evokes emotion and draws the viewer into the painting.
As an oil painter I have been influenced by the work of Dan McCaw. The use of impasto application of paint forces me to move outside my comfortable paradigm of tightly rendered images to capture the essence of shape, movement, and texture. When married effectively with color the resultant image speaks powerfully to the heart of the viewer.
As a watercolorist I have evolved from tight renderings to that of being primarily a colorist. The subtle reflections of water, in particular, are very compatible with the transparency of the watercolor medium. My creative inspiration is drawn to imagery that evokes hope and a strong sense of light and color. This usually translates as a juxtaposition of light and color against dark. Several of my pieces have been inspired by verses from the bible which convey hope and courage. I have formed a group of Christian artists, known as the Church of the Saviour Art Group with a mission to teach, inspire, and encourage. Our group sponsors an annual art show in the spring each year and have been able to attract world-class artists who share a common inspiration of hope. We also consider part of our mission to provide service to the community by sharing and teaching our creative gifts.
I now move into a new chapter in life and as an artist. I am pleased to be able to work in two mediums with two different styles. This provides me with a broad range of flexibility to capture the essence of my subject. My goal is to provide hope to my viewer that takes them to a special place of peace.
