Haiti

Church of the Saviour is partnering with churches in Haiti to come alongside pastors and church leaders as they minister to people in need after the January 2010 earthquake. In May 2010, COS initiated a week long "rice and beans fast" to pray for people in Haiti and to raise funds for reconstruction.

Since that time COS has:

• Established a Partnership with the Evangelical Baptist Church of Arcahaie after their church and school were badly damaged by the earthquake.
• Led a Trauma Training Conference for more than eighty women in church leadership positions to help them cope with post traumatic stress and to give them tools to help others in their churches with PTSD.
• Built the Bethel Evangelistic School in partnership with the church in Arcahaie that will enable more than 200 children to have a Christ centered education in this small town north of Port-au-Prince.
• Established a Tent City connection with a Baptist Church in Port-au-Prince where more than 400 families still live under dilapidated tarps in miserable conditions. We have helped conduct an asset based survey to determine how we can help the tent city community build on their strengths and abilities to leave the tent city and re-establish their lives.
• Created a Haiti Task Force to guide and oversee the COS Haiti ministry.
• Established a Haiti Business Development Committee to help explore ways that COS business people can mentor business owners and create employment in Haiti.
• Sent Five Short Term Mission Trips to Haiti to help build the new school, train teachers, and support business owners and job development in Haiti.

There is much that needs to be done and we invite COS members who would like to restore relationships and build community in Haiti. A Haiti School Education Committee will be established soon to help support and guide the Bethel Evangelistic School in Arcahaie. In addition to ongoing teacher training, much remains to be done:

• Develop a solar power system for the school
• Create a running water system for drinking and sanitation
• Help purchase an adjacent property so the children will have a school yard
• Develop a scholarship program for children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school.
• Explore how we can help the Evangelical Baptist Church of Arcahaie to rebuild their sanctuary.
