Care
Care Ministry Value #2
A caring Christian recognizes that understanding someone is a prerequisite to being able to truly help them. But in order to understand someone, the Christian must create an atmosphere of trust, in which the person in need can be honest. This involves a modeling of vulnerability on the part of the caregiver, as well as a demonstration of grace. A caring Christian does not simply wait for a need to be expressed to him, rather he discerns when others are in need and proactively meets them where they are. He utilizes wisdom and perseverance in creating and fulfilling his commitment to care for another. In the process of loving those in need, the love of Christ is exemplified; the goal of such care is to encourage them to honor God first.
This is based on the truths in the following verses:
- Seeks to understand the suffering individual. John 4:7-26
- Exemplifies the love of Christ. 1 Thessalonians 2:13-15, Romans 15:7
- Meets people in need ‘right where they are’. John 4:4-26
- Creates trusting environment. 1 Corinthians 13:7
- Models vulnerability. Matthew 26:36-38, Colossians 4:3-4
- Cultivates atmosphere of grace. 1 Corinthians 9:8, Ephesians 4:32, Galatians 6:2
- Discerns when others are in need. Genesis 40:6-8, Philippians 4:10, 2:25-30
- Follows through with their commitments. James 5:12, Proverbs 20:25
